Comments:
From the Serengeti plains to the hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara over 1.4 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain ripened grass and fresh water The best time to see the migration is usually between June and August when the wildebeest congregate and prepare to cross the famous Grumeti River. Frequently, it’s the zebra that lead the herds across the river. They appear to contemplate the river more calmly, watching for any signs of crocodiles and sniffing the air for any potential danger at the crossing. Often a small family of zebra will make its way to the front of the herd and tentatively drink at the shore. If the stallion feels confident there is no untoward danger lucking nearby, he will cautiously lead his family across the river, walking out into the water until he is forced to swim, striking out against the current. Once his family is swimming along behind him, the wildebeest soon follow. Those people privileged enough to witness this marvel of the natural world say that they can feel the animal’s sense of relief at reaching the safety of the far bank of the river.
